LONG-RANGE ULTRASONIC TESTING (LRUT)
Long Range Ultrasonic Testing (LRUT), also known as Guided Wave Ultrasonic Testing (GWUT), is an advanced non-destructive testing (NDT) technique designed to inspect long sections of pipelines efficiently from a single test location. By utilizing low-frequency guided ultrasonic waves, typically ranging from 5 to 250 kHz, LRUT can screen hundreds of meters of piping in a single inspection while providing 100% volumetric coverage of the pipe wall.
The inspection is performed using a ring of ultrasonic transducers mounted around the circumference of the pipe. These transducers generate low-frequency guided waves that propagate along the pipe wall with minimal attenuation, enabling long-range inspection. When the guided waves encounter changes in the pipe wall, such as corrosion, erosion, cracks, or other anomalies, part of the wave energy is reflected back to the transducer ring. The received signals are then analyzed to identify the location and severity of potential defects.
LRUT offers significant advantages over conventional inspection methods, particularly for pipelines that are difficult to access. The technique can be performed on in-service, insulated, buried, or elevated pipelines, eliminating or significantly reducing the need for excavation, insulation removal, scaffolding, or production shutdowns. This results in substantial savings in inspection time, cost, and operational disruption.
The method is highly effective for rapidly screening extensive pipeline systems and detecting corrosion or erosion under insulation (CUI), while requiring only minimal insulation removal at the inspection location. LRUT is also well suited for inspecting pipelines located in challenging environments, including buried pipelines, road crossings, pipe racks, offshore risers, splash zones, wharf and jetty piping, and pipe penetrations through bund walls.
With its ability to inspect long pipeline sections quickly, safely, and without interrupting operations, LRUT has become an essential integrity assessment tool for the oil and gas, petrochemical, power generation, and downstream processing industries. Its efficiency and versatility make it an ideal solution for both routine condition monitoring and risk-based inspection programs.
