PHASED ARRAY ULTRASONIC TESTING (PAUT)
Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) is an advanced non-destructive testing (NDT) technique used to inspect materials and components for internal defects. PAUT utilizes an array of ultrasonic transducers integrated into a single probe. By electronically controlling the timing and phase of ultrasonic pulses emitted from each transducer, the system can steer, focus, and scan the ultrasonic beam at various angles and depths without physically moving the probe.
This capability enables comprehensive inspection of complex geometries and large surface areas while producing high-resolution images in multiple formats, including A-Scan, B-Scan, S-Scan, and C-Scan. These imaging modes provide detailed visualization of discontinuities, improving defect characterization and assessment.
PAUT offers numerous advantages over conventional ultrasonic testing methods. It provides greater accuracy in detecting, locating, and sizing defects, as well as wider inspection coverage and the ability to examine components from multiple angles in a single scan. The technique also ensures excellent repeatability and consistency, resulting in reliable inspection data.
Due to its versatility, PAUT is widely used in various industrial applications, including weld inspection, high-temperature inspections up to 350°C, corrosion monitoring of pipelines, storage tanks, and pressure vessels, as well as in-service inspections of critical components such as flange face corrosion, bolts, and turbine rotor blades.
Compared with conventional inspection methods, PAUT delivers faster inspection times, improved portability, and eliminates radiation hazards associated with radiographic testing. These advantages make PAUT an essential inspection technology across industries such as oil and gas, aerospace, power generation, and manufacturing.
